Whale, hello there! Photographer captures the incredible moment an open-mouthed humpback whale breaches water

Now that’s just what you call a close encounter! 

As a humpback whale launched from the water and soared in to the air, prior to crashing down in to the sea below, photographer Jodi Frediani was lucky enough to capture the rare moment.

Images of the majestic mammal were snapped throughout a swim programme along with humpback whales at Silver Spine in the Dominican Republic.

Jodi from Santa Cruz, California, was taking section as quickly as the once-in-a-lifetime moment presented itself. 

She said: ‘I was out on the Silver Bank for 3 weeks participating in the swim routine along with humpback whales, along with Conscious Breath Adventures, which holds among the 3 permits allowing guests to snorkel along with humpback whales.

‘The location of the Silver Bank, waters of the Dominican Republic, is the main calving and breeding grounds for North Atlantic humpback whales,’ she explained.

‘We had been watching two whales swimming near our boat – most likely a male and female. One was raising its pectoral flippers in to the air and slapping the water.

‘Then, free of warning, this male fired off a breach close to our little boat.’

'I happened to be in the right place at the right time, camera at the ready, to get this breaching whale head on,' Jodi said

‘Obtaining a shot of the open mouth as it strike the water facing straight to me was pretty lucky.

‘You can easily easily see the baleen inside the mouth. The baleen is just what these whales usage to feed, straining out water and trapping fish or krill along with this ‘moustache’ inside the mouth.’
