Around one week prior to her return leg on February 4, the traveller paid £590 to upgrade from economy to premium economy and called to order her on-board meal – which needs a minimum of 24 hours notice in advance.

She claims that on arrival at the airport, she asked staff whether the meal was on the aircraft, to which she was ensured it was.

Speaking to Stuff.nz, Pitot said: ‘Normally [Air New Zealand] is truly accommodating, yet this time it was actually horrendous. I required a gluten-free meal. Essentially, I can’t consume gluten, dairy, sugar, fish, pork, and a few various other things. 

‘As they were serving they came by and said, ‘your meal isn’t on the plane’. The guy went away and brought me spine a teeny-tiny plate of brown, wilted lettuce leaves. The guy was sort of joking concerning it, which I believed was a bit rude.’
